Come for the Regency seafront: Sidmouth keeps a long esplanade of white and cream villas below red sandstone cliffs, with the terraced Connaught Gardens at the western end. It grew into a fashionable resort in the early 1800s and has stayed a genteel one. For a week each summer the folk festival takes over, filling the pubs and halls with music.
