Beer is a fishing village set in a chalk cove on Lyme Bay, its painted boats winched up the pebble beach and crab sold from seafront huts. The creamy Beer stone quarried in caves a mile inland was carved into much of Exeter Cathedral, and the old workings are open for tours. Branscombe lies just along the coast to the west. Axminster is the nearest station, roughly 11km north-east.
