Reckoned one of the longest villages in England, Branscombe strings its thatched cottages down a combe on the Jurassic Coast to a shingle beach. The National Trust looks after the old bakery, now a tea room, and a thatched working forge said to be among the oldest in the country. Beer is the next cove east. Honiton is the nearest station, about 11km north.
