Laxton still farms the way medieval England did. It’s the last village in the country to work the open-field system, its three great fields — Mill Field, South Field and West Field — divided into strips shared among the tenants. A manorial Court Leet still meets each autumn to inspect the strips and settle boundary disputes, with a small visitor centre at the Dovecote Inn explaining how it all works. The village sits in quiet farmland north-west of Newark.
