Deep in Sherwood Forest stands an oak thought to be 800 to 1,000 years old, its enormous limbs so heavy they rest on props and braces first fitted more than a century ago. Local legend makes it Robin Hood’s hideout. A boardwalk from the visitor centre near Edwinstowe loops out to it through the old oaks, and it’s free to reach on the Sherwood Forest reserve.
