Welbeck is the Portland family’s Dukeries estate, still private, but a corner of it is open around the Harley Gallery — built into the old estate gasworks — where the Portland Collection shows off treasures such as a pearl earring said to have been worn by Charles I at his execution. There’s a walled kitchen garden, a farm shop and a café too. The estate is best known for the reclusive 5th Duke of Portland’s warren of tunnels and underground rooms, dug in the 1860s. It adjoins Clumber Park to the south. The Harley Gallery and farm shop are free to visit, open daily; the walled garden itself is seen only on pre-booked tours.
