Shireoaks Hall is a ruinous 17th-century house near Worksop; its formal water garden — ponds linked by a canal, with clipped hedges around them — was laid out in the same period and is still legible in the landscape. The hall stays in private hands, but a public footpath from the car park by the Hewett Arms threads between the Lady Pond and Kitchen Pond to the house front, then follows the canal out across the old parkland. Free to walk, any time. Chesterfield Canal runs close by to the north.
