Blyth grew up as a stop on the old Great North Road, the London to York coaching route, and its inns once put up travellers by the dozen. Above the broad green stands the church of St Mary and St Martin, the surviving nave of a Benedictine priory founded in 1088 and among the earliest Norman work in England. Worksop station is about 8km to the south-west.
