Renishaw Hall has belonged to the Sitwell family since it was built in 1625, and remains best known through the writers Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell. In the late nineteenth century Sir George Sitwell laid out the Italianate garden that is the main draw: clipped hedges, garden rooms, ornamental ponds and long vistas stepping away from the house. Sir Reresby Sitwell added a vineyard in 1972, for a time reckoned among the most northerly in the world. The gardens open Wednesday to Sunday through the season on a paid ticket.
