Sir Reresby Sitwell planted vines in a walled paddock at Renishaw Hall in 1972, against expert advice — the spot was certified the most northerly vineyard in the world until 1986. The early wine was famously undrinkable, but warmer seasons and newer hands have turned it around, and the walled vineyard now makes a few thousand bottles a year. It’s seen on a self-guided tour, with admission to the hall’s gardens.
