Edwinstowe stands at the heart of Sherwood Forest, and by tradition Robin Hood married Maid Marian in its church of St Mary. Whether or not the story holds, the village is the usual start of the walk out to the Major Oak, the ancient tree about a mile off through the old oaks of the forest reserve.
