A maypole stands permanently on the green at Wellow, roughly 17 metres tall and one of only a handful of standing maypoles left in England. There has been one here since at least the 1850s; the present pole went up in 2011. It’s danced round each year on the Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May. The rest of the year it’s a quiet red-brick village near Newark.
