A plain-looking village church that opens into a blaze of colour inside. Between 1896 and 1898 the architect Ninian Comper reworked St Mary’s for the Duke of Newcastle, adding a gilded rood screen, painted glass and a hanging pyx, and reviving the medieval shrine of Our Lady of Egmanton; pilgrimages still end here. It sits well off the main roads in Egmanton village, open and free, and worth the detour for the woodwork alone.
