Hexham grew up around its abbey, founded by St Wilfrid in 674, whose Saxon crypt was built from stones carried off the Roman fort at nearby Corbridge. The town also has the Old Gaol, put up in the 1330s and reckoned one of the first purpose-built prisons in England, now a small museum. There’s a lively market under the abbey each week. Hexham’s station is a short walk from the centre, on the Tyne Valley line.
