On the north bank of the Tyne, Corbridge is a good-looking market village of honey-coloured stone, full of independent shops, delis and places to eat. Its church, St Andrew’s, has a Saxon tower built partly from stone carried off the Roman town of Corstopitum, whose excavated remains sit just west of the village. Hexham is a few miles up the river. Corbridge has its own station on the Tyne Valley line.
