Hexham Old Gaol is often called the first purpose-built prison in England, completed around 1330, and it now holds a small museum on the lawless centuries of the Border reivers, with a glass lift dropping down through the old cells. It stands right in the centre of Hexham, a couple of minutes from the abbey. Opening is seasonal, so check the days before you go.
