The crypt is the reason to come: built in 674, reached by steep steps below the chancel, and the only part of Wilfrid’s original church to survive intact. What stands above it is not a ruin but a working Anglican parish church, open daily and free, with the scheduled monastic remains lying under and around it. Hexham is a few minutes’ walk, and the Rat Inn is a couple of miles north.
