Built largely from stone carted up from the Roman town and Hadrian’s Wall, St Andrew’s in Corbridge reuses an entire Roman archway inside its tower. The lower stage of that tower is Anglo-Saxon, and a 14th-century fortified vicar’s pele stands in the churchyard, left over from the unsettled border years. Corbridge station is under a kilometre south, with good pubs in the village for afterwards.
