Fortrose is a small, sedate town on the Black Isle’s south shore, built around the red-sandstone ruins of its medieval cathedral, which sit on a green in the middle of town. From here a shingle spit runs out to Chanonry Point, one of the best places in Britain to watch bottlenose dolphins from the shore. Come on a rising tide and you’ve a good chance of seeing them close in.
