One of the best-preserved 18th-century towns in Scotland, Cromarty sits right at the tip of the Black Isle, its grand merchants’ houses and low fishertown cottages barely changed. The geologist and writer Hugh Miller was born here in 1801, and his thatched birthplace cottage is now a National Trust for Scotland museum. The waters offshore are among the best in Europe for bottlenose dolphins, and a tiny four-car ferry crosses to Nigg from June to September.
