Hugh Miller, the stonemason who became one of the great early geologists and writers, was born in this thatched cottage in Cromarty in 1802. The cottage and the adjoining Georgian house now tell his story, cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Open seasonally and ticketed, so check the dates. A lovely pairing with a wander round Cromarty itself.
