Doune is best known for its castle, a well-preserved medieval stronghold built around 1400 for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany. Film crews love it: it played Camelot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Winterfell in the first series of Game of Thrones, and Castle Leoch in Outlander. The village itself is an old cattle-trysting town on the River Teith, with Deanston distillery just across the water.
