Charlestown was laid out in the 1750s as a planned village for the workers who quarried and burned limestone on the Forth shore. Rows of low cottages sit around a green, and down by the harbour there’s a long bank of historic lime kilns cut into the shore. The Inn at Charlestown is handy for lunch by the water, and Dunfermline lies a few kilometres inland.
