Hopetoun House stands above the Firth of Forth near South Queensferry, begun by Sir William Bruce around 1700 and grandly extended by William Adam from 1721. Sweeping parkland and formal gardens run down towards the water, with the Forth bridges in view. It’s still a family home, open to visitors from Easter to late September with an admission charge. Abercorn Church sits on the same estate, worth pairing with a visit.
