Right on the water at South Queensferry, under the great red spans of the Forth Bridge, The Hawes Inn is a 17th-century coaching inn with rooms and a restaurant. Robert Louis Stevenson knew it and used it in Kidnapped — it’s where David Balfour is lured aboard ship. The setting is the thing: a pint in the garden with the bridge looming overhead is hard to beat. Dalmeny station is about 1km up the hill.
