Andrew Carnegie grew up poor in Dunfermline, shut out as a boy from the private grounds of Pittencrieff — so once he’d made his fortune he bought the estate and handed it to the town in 1903. Locals still call it “the Glen”. The 76-acre park runs down a wooded glen below Dunfermline Abbey, with glasshouses, gardens and a well-known troop of peacocks. Free to wander, right in the heart of town.
