In the late 18th century the copper mine on Parys Mountain, just south of Amlwch, was the largest in the world, and the harbour was cut and extended to ship the ore out. That trade has long gone, but the narrow port survives, along with the Copper Kingdom heritage centre that tells the story. The town sits well out on the north coast — Valley is the nearest station, around 20km south-west.
