Tyneham was cleared of its people in late 1943, when the War Office took the valley for army training and the villagers left, told they could return once the war was won. They never were allowed back. The roofless cottages, the school and the church have been kept as a sort of open museum of village life frozen in that year. It stands within the Lulworth ranges, so it’s only reachable on range walk days — check the firing times. Wool station is about 8km away.
