Saltburn Cliff Lift
Local highlightApproximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.
Opened in 1884, the Saltburn Cliff Lift is the oldest working water-balance funicular in Britain — two cars joined by a cable, one filling its tank with water to haul the other up. It still carries people between the town and the pier below, saving the steep zig-zag on foot. It runs seasonally, so check before you go. The Ship Inn is right at the bottom by the shore.
