Telford's canal soaring across the Dee valley.
Thomas Telford and William Jessop’s masterpiece, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal across the Dee valley in a cast-iron trough set on eighteen slender stone piers, some 126 feet above the river. It opened in 1805 after ten years’ work and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. You can walk the towpath straight across for nothing, water on one side and a sheer drop on the other, or float over by boat from Llangollen Wharf.
