A Marquess's house on the Menai Strait, Snowdon beyond.
Plas Newydd was home for nearly fifty years to the Ladies of Llangollen, Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who set up house together and turned this cottage above Llangollen into a Gothic curiosity. The gardens keep their spirit — a “ruined” archway, rustic bridges over the stream, a little temple — with a 19th-century Gorsedd stone circle in the grounds. The gardens are free to enter and the house charges. It’s an easy walk up from the town and St Collen’s Church.
