Parkgate’s parade is an old sea-wall promenade that once looked out on a busy Dee anchorage, until the river silted up and left a vast tract of salt marsh in its place. It’s now a superb birdwatching spot, with hen harriers and short-eared owls quartering the marsh in winter and dramatic scenes when a big spring tide pushes right up to the wall. Grab an ice cream or some potted shrimps along the front. Ness Botanic Gardens is close by, and Neston station is about 2km away.
