Founded in 1898 by the Liverpool cotton broker and plant-hunter Arthur Bulley, Ness Botanic Gardens spread over 64 acres above the Dee estuary and now belong to the University of Liverpool. They’re especially good for rhododendrons, magnolias and rock plants, with wide views across to Wales. There’s an admission charge. Neston station is about 2.5km off, near the villages of Neston and Burton.
