Built around 1650 to house the labourers digging the Bedford Rivers that drained this stretch of fen, the Anchor sits alone against the washland bank at Sutton Gault. It’s a low, dark-beamed 17th-century inn with a long dining reputation and rooms upstairs, though it has changed hands more than once, so worth checking it’s open before a special trip. Ely and its station are about 11km east.
