In a former sandstone quarry at the heart of Shrewsbury’s riverside Quarry Park sits the Dingle, a sunken ornamental garden opened in 1879 and made famous by Percy Thrower, Britain’s first television gardener, who ran the town’s parks from 1946 to 1974. Its beds still carry big seasonal bedding displays around a small pool. Free to visit as part of the open park; Shrewsbury station is about half a kilometre away.
