Shrewsbury’s Roman Catholic cathedral is a Gothic Revival building above the Severn, opened in 1856. Augustus Pugin was the intended architect, but he died before work began and the design passed to his teenage son, Edward Welby Pugin, who saw it through. The formal dedication is to Our Lady Help of Christians and St Peter of Alcantara. It’s open to visitors, and only about 800m from Shrewsbury station.
