Look across the traffic for a stone pulpit standing on its own in a car park. It dates from about 1300 and it used to be indoors, in the monks’ refectory — until 1836, when the Norman ruins were cleared for Telford’s London to Holyhead road and it was left stranded on the wrong side. The nave survives as a parish church, and Ellis Peters set the Cadfael novels here. The Severn Way runs along the river below.
