Designed by the landscape architect Thomas Mawson and his son Edward, Saffron Hill Cemetery opened in 1931 as Leicester’s municipal cemetery for South Wigston. The layout is formal — long avenues, a pair of Georgian-style gate lodges, a chapel and specimen trees — and it’s the resting place of people from many different faiths and backgrounds. It’s open to walk through daily, usually from early morning to early evening, and there’s no charge. The Grand Union Canal passes a couple of kilometres south.
