Leicester’s oldest church has Roman brick built right into its Saxon walls. St Nicholas stands next to the Jewry Wall, a surviving chunk of the Roman baths, and its early builders quarried that ruin for material, so bands of Roman tile run through the herringbone masonry around the tower and north nave. The oldest stonework dates to around 900. Open on selected days, with the Jewry Wall museum alongside.
