Founded in 1107 by Robert de Beaumont, first earl of Leicester, St Mary de Castro stands in the bailey of Leicester Castle and keeps some of the best Norman detail in the city, including a richly carved set of sedilia. It began as a collegiate church served by a dean and canons; a Gothic parish church was later built onto the south side and the two knocked into one. Grade I listed, and open on selected days. Leicester station is about 1km east.
