Dr Jimmy Smart made Marwood Hill over the second half of the twentieth century — twenty acres of a private North Devon valley with three lakes and a bog garden. It keeps the National Collection of Astilbe, some 140 kinds massed by the water, along with rare shrubs and trees. Paid entry through summer, with a tearoom. About four miles from Barnstaple, whose station is around 5km away.
