Braunton keeps one of only a couple of medieval open-strip field systems left in England: the Great Field, still farmed in unhedged strips laid out by the 1200s. The large village also backs onto Braunton Burrows, the vast dune system behind Saunton Sands, and the surf beach at Croyde is close by. Barnstaple station is about 8km to the south-east.
