Appledore sits where the Taw and Torridge estuaries meet, a working shipbuilding village of narrow lanes running down to quays lined with fishermen’s cottages and small galleries. Boatyards still turn out vessels here. A little seasonal foot-ferry crosses to Instow on the far bank, and Barnstaple, with the nearest station, is about 9km up the estuary.
