Henry Williamson settled in Georgeham in 1921 and wrote Tarka the Otter here, drawing on the rivers and coast around the village; he’s buried in the churchyard, and the country hereabouts is still called Tarka Country. It’s an inland thatched village a short way from the surf beaches of Croyde and Putsborough. Barnstaple, the nearest station, is about 12km to the south-east.
