Instow has a broad sandy beach on the Torridge, looking straight across the water to Appledore. A small passenger ferry runs between the two in summer. Behind the dunes a former railway path, now part of the Tarka Trail, carries walkers and cyclists along the estuary, and there’s a row of pubs and cafés on the front. Barnstaple, with the nearest station, is about 8km upstream.
