Arlington Court was the Chichester family’s home for centuries — a plain Regency house in the hills north-east of Barnstaple, built in 1820 and left to the National Trust by Rosalie Chichester in 1949, stuffed with the things she collected. The old stables now hold the National Trust Carriage Museum, with dozens of horse-drawn carriages, and there’s a Victorian formal garden and a walled kitchen garden. Paid entry.
