Highdown is a chalk garden carved out of an old quarry above the coast near Worthing, begun in 1909 by the botanist Sir Frederick Stern as an experiment in what would grow on pure chalk. It worked well enough that it now holds a National Plant Collection, much of it grown from seed brought back by early twentieth-century plant hunters. Owned by Worthing Borough Council since Stern’s death, it’s free to enter every day, though paths are steep and uneven in places. Goring-by-Sea station is about 1km away.
