Below the wooded slope under Arundel Castle, the WWT Arundel Wetland Centre occupies a valley of reedbed, lagoons and wet meadow. WWT stands for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the conservation charity Peter Scott founded, and the reserve mixes collections of ducks, geese and swans you can walk among with wilder ponds where hides look out over waders and warblers. The signature is the boat safari, where an electric boat runs quietly along a channel deep into the reedbed, good for close views of birds and, if you are lucky, water voles. Entry is ticketed. The centre sits at the edge of the South Downs, and the town of Arundel, with its castle and cathedral, is a short walk away.
