Park at the National Trust car park on Bignor Hill and you’re straight onto open chalk grassland with long views north over the Weald. The thing to look for is Stane Street, the Roman road that once ran from Chichester to London: across this stretch it survives as an agger, the raised earth bank the Romans built their roads on, plain enough to walk along. Bignor sits below to the north, and Bignor Roman Villa, known for its mosaic floors, is a mile or so away. The South Downs Way crosses the top, so the viewpoint drops easily into a longer downland walk.
