Edwin Lascelles built Harewood House in the 1760s on the proceeds of Caribbean plantations, hiring John Carr for the exterior, Robert Adam for the interiors and Capability Brown to lay out the grounds — a formidable trio, and it shows in the Chippendale furniture and painted ceilings inside. It’s open as a full day out, house and grounds, most of the year, with shorter winter-weekend hours from January. Harewood Castle, a ruined medieval tower on the estate, is worth the short walk too.
